5 Steps of Decision Making:

by Mark Matlock

God has given us the ability to make choices! We are wise if we use His counsel for making decisions!

Step #1 How long do I have to make this decision?

Do not act in haste

Proverbs 19:2 It is not good to have zeal without knowledge, nor to be hasty and miss the way.
Ask these questions before making a decision.
Do I have enough time to THINK about my choice?
Can you put off making this decision
Set a time to have your decision.

Step #2 What do I know about this decision?

Gather all the facts.

Don't jump to conclusions
Proverbs 18:17 The first to present his case seems right, till another comes forward and questions him.
Answering these questions may help you.
How many sides to the situation do I know?
What are the consequences of my decision?
Do I need more time and explore my options?

Step #3 What are my motives?

Realize, you can always justify everything

Proverbs 12:15 The way of the fool seems right to him, but a wise man listens to advice.

Honestly consider the following questions:
What is my initial reaction to this decision?
Do I already know what I want the decision to be?
Do I know deep down inside that my desire is wrong?

Once you have taken time to understand your decision, you now have the ability to go to step #4

Step #4 Advice from outside sources

Seek counsel to make your decision

Proverbs 12:15 The way of a fool seems right to him, but a wise man listens to advice.

From God's word
Proverbs 18:10 The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe.
Proverbs 21:30 There is no wisdom, no insight, no plan that can succeed against the Lord.

Through prayer:
Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

From advisors:
Proverbs 15:22 Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed.

Step #5 Commit your decision to the Lord

Proverbs 16:3 Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and your plans will succeed.
