The Truth About Satan ..er.. Santa

*** Huge Spoiler Alert About Santa Claus Beware! ***

Driving back home from my grandparents after Easter when I was about seven years old (guess I was riding, my dad was driving) , I got to thinking about The Easter Bunny, Tooth Fairies and of course Santa Claus.

Santa I believed in, and I'd been suspicious of the tooth fairy ever since I found my baby teeth in my mom's dresser, but the Easter Bunny was kind of hard to believe in. Of course, I knew that if one failed they all failed, so I went out on a limb and asked my mom a question that would put her in a corner.

"Mom you would never lie to me would you?"

"No, of course not Mark" was her confident reply. I had her where I wanted her.

"Then ... is the Easter Bunny Real?" I asked.

She looked nervously at my dad whose eyes I could only see in the rear view mirror.

I jumped in with my second question," What about Santa and the tooth fairy?"

To be honest, I'd never seen them this nervous (and wouldn't again until I was in sixth grade and they told me about ..you know ..where babies "come from").

Her honest response soon followed ... ***SPOILER ALERT BACK OUT NOW!*** ... indeed it had all been pretend.

My next question was simply, "Is Jesus made up too?"

I think it is peculiar that at Christmas and Easter we lie to our kids at a time we gather to celebrate the greatest truth ever known to man.

What do you think about that?
