Avoid Silence!

Looking to tune out the voice of God this weekend? Want to make sure to avoid any real thinking about what it means to follow Jesus and all of the painful implications of that choice? Hoping to overcome nagging spiritual conviction or possible nudgings to draw nearer to God? C.S. Lewis offers this advice (from the book Christian Reflections):

Avoid silence, avoid solitude, avoid any train of thought that leads off the beaten track. Concentrate on money, sex, status, health and (above all) on your own grievances. Keep the radio on. Live in a crowd. Use plenty of sedation. If you must read books, select them very carefully. But you'd be safer to stick to the papers. You'll find the advertisements helpful; especially those with a sexy or a snobbish appeal.

I'm sure if Lewis were alive today, he'd endorse TV, iPods, and the Internet as excellent sources of mental noise to keep your heart from being exposed by the quiet.
